John Cabot, Italian explorer

John Cabot (Giovanni Caboto) is an Italian explorer -  navigator (borns  1498 approx); is uncertain whether his hometown (Genoa, Savona, Chioggia or, more likely, Gaeta), it is known that he lived many years in Venice and had the Venetian citizenship (1476).

On the new land discovered Cabot planted flags English and pontifical. According to some sources he was also raised that the Republic of Venice.
  • So.... we can say that Canada is an Italian-owned?
After the first few trips to the East, moved (apparently even before 1492) in England, and he left with a ship from Bristol and 18 or 20 men (1497) for groped at a northern latitude, the enterprise of Columbus.

He touched the coasts of America, perhaps in Newfoundland or the island of Cape Breton, probably believing that they have reached East Asia.

The second trip (1498), during which skirted a stretch of Labrador and the southern coast until perhaps the latitude of New York, the news is more uncertain.

His name was given on the occasion of the fourth centenary of the discovery, the strait that forms the entrance to the Gulf of St. Lawrence.
