Taxes in Italy: higher than during Roman Empire

The tax burden in Italy, and flies in the fourth quarter of 2012 touches the 52%, a record with a jump of 1.5 percentage points compared to the same period last year.
In an average year, more records, came instead to 44% (up 1.4 points year on year).
The notes to the ISTAT (Italian Institute of Public statistic) in the quarterly income statement of the Public Administration.
During the Roman Empire the taxes were lower, the Roman provinces were charging 20-30% tax.
When the tax surged, up to 50% of GDP, it was because Rome had 500,000 soldiers, and was also a factor the economic decline of the Roman Empire.
